WHEN I asked
Bernadette Sembrano how she feels about touching so many lives through her
public affairs TV program Nagmamahal, Kapamilya, she answered, “It’s the other
way around. These people I meet are the ones who touch my life in a wonderful
way. I learn a lot from their experiences and I get inspiration from their
stories of courage, love, faith and determination.”
Sembrano’s team
has been bridging families worldwide for a year now, reuniting long lost
friends, lovers and relatives. With the program’s vision to act as an emotional
link—to present real drama and offer emotional enrichment—to remind viewers of
the importance of the basic unit of family, of sacrifices made and of being
together despite the distance that may separate them, the amiable program
presenter has traveled to many destinations to bring their stories to the
viewers.
To date, she has
scoured through three continents: Asia, Australia and North America. From her
experiences, she thinks doing the episodes in the United States can be tiring
but the stories are all worth the sacrifices. She also enjoyed Japan
tremendously and was impressed with the discipline of the people and the
cleanliness of the places she visited. Recently, she and the program staff flew
to Taiwan.
Her many travels
continue to enrich Sembrano’s life tremendously and her immersions have made
Sembrano appreciate the Philippines even more. The show also sparked a desire
for her to do more public service for our kababayans living abroad.
“Most of our
subjects are working in faraway places because the country couldn’t provide them
with jobs that can sustain their day-to-day existence. And it can get really
lonely out there. If we can at least help them ease their homesickness and allow
their stories to inspire our viewers, then I think we have done our part,” she
intoned.
Nagmamahal,
Kapamilya has been touching families across the globe. “The main reason for all
of these is the fact that we bring families together. For good, for a little
while, how long or how short, we reunite people and I think that is priceless.”
She is thankful
that the program is fully supported by ABS-CBN Global and Philippine Airlines.
We also have to spend to become agents of change and I’m glad that there are
people, not only big corporations, that give whatever they can to help. I guess
that trait is very Filipino.”
Nagmamahal,
Kapamilya is celebrating its first anniversary. Expect more touching episodes of
changed lives, dream fulfilled and families reunited from Sembrano and her team.
